The Okanui Beginning

Around the age of 15, Dick Ash pulled out
his mother’s old Singer sewing machine and
made up some cotton canvas boardshorts.

The post master at Avalon gave Dick some
mail bags that had come from South Australia.

So Dick carefully cut out the section with the
letters S.A. Aust. and used it on the leg panel.
Naturally he told his mates that the letters stood
for the Surfing Association of Australia.

His boardshorts empire was off to a flying start.

And then to the drawing board to design some
colourful patterns, like a nice Hibiscus flower….
